Steve Milne is an accredited Matesel operator and has produced many Matesel joining solutions since the program became available.
Matesel is a joining and selection program for sheep that have Sheep Genetics ASBVs. The program is designed to maximise genetic gain whilst limiting inbreeding and co-ancestry. It can select both rams and ewes for joining whilst taking into account breeding objectives, mating types (natural, AI, ET etc) and joining constraints.
At RHAg, stud breeders complete a questionnaire that contains a list of possible ewes and rams, the required number of joinings, joining types and breeding objectives including targets and constraints. After running Matsel Steve will discuss the results and run the program until the best result is achieved. Breeders receive a comprehensive report including predicted results per individual joining, flock averages and joining lists.
The Matesel program was created by Brian Kinghorn, Emeritus Professor of Quantitative Genetics at the University of New England. It is used by many livestock and plant breeding industries to make maximum genetic gain without increasing co-ancestry and inbreeding.
The Sheep Matesel program is managed by Sheep Genetics and is only available to trained operators. There is no cost to use the program other than the operator’s time.
